The promontory itself — a near-vertical basaltic cape carved by volcanic forces roughly five million years ago — remained inaccessible to most travellers until the late twentieth century, when engineers cut a road through the laurel forest and terraced vineyards that blanket the southern coast between Câmara de Lobos and Ribeira Brava. The glass deck extends five metres beyond the cliff edge, a cantilevered square framed in steel and secured to the basalt by anchor bolts drilled eight metres into the rock. Below, terraced plots known as fajãs cling to narrow ledges near sea level, cultivated by farmers who descend via cable car to tend vines and vegetables in microclimates warmed by reflected sunlight and shielded from the trade winds. The conservation fee introduced in 2015 funds path maintenance, platform cleaning, and staffing during peak hours, when coach tours from Funchal converge between mid-morning and early afternoon. Sunrise visits offer the clearest air and the longest sight lines, stretching west toward Ponta do Pargo and east to the Desertas Islands, a chain of uninhabited limestone ridges thirty kilometres offshore. The platform itself accommodates roughly twenty people at capacity; rangers limit occupancy when winds exceed twenty-five knots, a threshold reached six to eight days per month during the winter.
