Cabo Girão rises 580 metres above the Atlantic, its vertical basalt face crowned by a glass-floor platform that cantilevers over one of Europe's tallest sea cliffs.
Opened in October 2012, the transparent skywalk replaced a modest concrete miradouro, transforming a coastal viewpoint into Madeira's most visited landmark outside Funchal. The cliff owes its height to two million years of shield volcanism and marine erosion, the same tectonic forces that built the Laurisilva forests and sculpted the island's deep ravines. Below the precipice, a patchwork of fajãs—narrow coastal terraces—supports centuries-old vineyards cultivated by cable car, their sweet Malvasia grapes fermented into Madeira wine since the 1400s.
Cabo Girão skywalk tours anchor a network of experiences that span the southwestern coast, linking the miradouro to jeep safaris through the Estreito de Câmara de Lobos wine district, catamaran cruises along the cliff base, and guided hikes down the Vereda do Fajã dos Padres to the sea-level plantations. The platform itself measures twelve square metres, its laminated glass engineered to support forty visitors at once while offering unobstructed views across the Câmara de Lobos bay to Funchal's eastern promontory. On clear mornings, the horizon stretches sixty kilometres south toward the Desertas Islands, a trio of uninhabited rock spires visible as dark silhouettes against the open ocean.
The site functions as both geological monument and agricultural vantage point. The terraced fajãs below are accessed by a second cable car—the Teleférico das Fajãs—which descends 300 metres to vineyards producing around 4,000 litres of wine annually, harvested by hand and hauled upward in metal baskets. The contrast between the engineered suspension of the skywalk and the centuries-old farming rhythms below anchors the site's layered appeal. Visitors stepping onto the glass floor confront not just vertigo but the vertical reach of human cultivation, the way islanders have farmed the unfarmable since the first Portuguese settlers arrived in 1420.
Cabo Girão's infrastructure remains minimal by design. A single café occupies the clifftop plaza, its terrace oriented west toward sunset views that draw evening crowds from May through September. The skywalk itself opens daily from 08:00 to 20:00, with a modest €2 conservation fee introduced in 2018 to fund trail maintenance and erosion control. The platform's transparency remains its singular draw—a twelve-metre square of engineered emptiness where the Atlantic surges half a kilometre below, framed by the green lattice of terraces and the white geometry of Câmara de Lobos in the middle distance.
